In a boost to its global ambitions, Tata Power's joint venture company Cennergi has emerged as the preferred bidder to develop in South Africa two wind power projects with a total capacity of 234 Mw.
Launched in April, South Africa-based Cennergi is an equal joint venture between Tata Power and Exxaro Resources.
Cennergi would develop 139 Mw Amakhala and 95 Mw Tsitsikamma wind power projects in South Africa, Tata Power said in a statement today.
"We are pleased to share that Cennergi has been announced as preferred bidder for two wind projects of 234 Mw - Amakhala 139 Mw and Tsitsikamma 95 Mw," Tata Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said.
The company's global footprint has been further augmented through the JV with Exxaro to explore electricity generation opportunities across South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, he noted.
Tata Power has an installed capacity of over 5,000 Mw.
The bids for the two projects were submitted on March 5 under the second window of the Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme floated by South Africa's Department of Energy.
"We had presented a very high quality bid, tailor-made for the energy needs of the Republic of South Africa. We are very excited by this opportunity and are looking forward to building successful wind projects," Cennergi CEO Thomas Garner said.
Cennergi focuses on the investigation of feasibility, development, ownership, operation, maintenance, acquisition and management of electricity generation projects in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.
South Africa is looking to have mix of power projects, including renewables, to ensure energy supply stability in the country.
Meanwhile, Suzlon in a separate statement said it would supply wind turbines for the Amakhala project.
